Winter in Florida — ahh the irony. Despite winters in Florida being an enjoyable time for most, plenty of Floridians don’t know the secrets to survival. That’s right, we said “survival.” Dealing with a Florida winter is no small feat, which is why we provided a few tips below for you to do your best to make it through in one piece.

  1. Get ready for the beaches to be a bit more crowded than you’re used to.

Flickr Jim Crocker As a local, you will just have to find those secret spots we won’t tell any of the tourists. Maybe it would be best to send them to any one of these 13 top-rated beaches instead…

  1. The water might be a bit colder than usual — 60 degrees in January, how rude!

Matt Deavenport/ Flickr I mean we might even need to head to one of these 9 tropical places in Florida just to warm up.

  1. Sure, you can invest in gloves if you want, but maybe just the fingerless kind…because your hands will still sweat.

Flickr Cam Pervan You will also want to have easy access to your phone so you can take some incredible pictures since we live in such a photogenic state.

  1. Brrrrr — time to invest in a light jacket, too, it can get chilly.

Flickr Admitter The good news is when everyone from up north moves here, they give away their jackets, so you can always find some nice ones at a thrift shop,

  1. Be prepared to hear a lot of “must be nice!” from your friends and family up north.

Flickr Marcy Leigh You know what? It is, but we have had snow in Florida a couple of times over the years.

  1. Also, be prepared to purchase an air mattress for the same friends up north.

Flickr The Sleep Judge You could also just keep your house to yourself and recommend a nice unique place to stay.

  1. Don’t worry! Those giant slow-moving blobs of shadow under the water are just manatees tryin’ to stay alive.

Flickr Jill Bazeley In fact, Blue Springs is the best place to see these lovable sea cows. They are drawn to the warmer waters and between November to March, you will see dozens of them.

  1. The boots you’ll be buying versus others across the country will be sliiiightly different.

  1. Those hefty clouds? Only will produce rain, don’t you worry.

Flickr sporadic It doesn’t happen very often so you might be at a loss for something to do so check out these 9 things to do inside when it’s raining, and you’re welcome; we will survive this winter together.

  1. While other Americans are out there buying snow shovels, you’re going to need some more sunscreen.

  1. Definitely keep your sunglasses handy; all that sunshine can be quite depressing.
