The idiom, the hill you want to die on, refers to a belief you hold so strongly that you’re willing to fight for it, no matter the cost. We all have our own hills, of course. However, it’s likely that those of us living in Mississippi share a few because there are just some things all residents will defend to the death. Not so sure? Well, from food preferences to vocabulary, here are nine hills every Mississippian is willing to die on.

  1. All soda is Coke.

Mike Mozart/Flickr If it’s root beer, it’s Coke. If it’s Sprite, it’s coke. If it’s Coke, it’s Coke. Need we go on?

  1. It’s not the heat; it’s the humidity.

Darko Rohr/Flickr High temperatures are one thing, but high temps paired with intense humidity is a whole other monster that, unless you’ve experienced, you wouldn’t understand.

  1. It is completely acceptable to consume chocolate at breakfast.

  1. Mississippi has seven seasons.

Billy Brown/Flickr In addition to winter, spring, summer, and fall, there’s hurricane season as well as crawfish season and hunting season.

  1. All king cakes are NOT created equal.

Rex Hammock/Flickr King cakes are sold just about everywhere during carnival season. That doesn’t mean Mississippians buy their king cakes from any old place, though. Most everyone has their preferred spot.

  1. In the world of sandwiches, po’ boys reign supreme.

Steve Petrucelli/Flickr Subs, hoagies, and grinders? They’ve got nothing on po’ boys!

  1. Pro football is overrated.

Jimmy Smith/Flickr Mississippi doesn’t have a professional football team, but sports fans in the state aren’t missing out. Between a bevy of high school teams and some great college teams there’s plenty of football to be seen.

  1. Making tea is an art.

Via Tsuji/Flickr Mississippians take pride in their tea, and most of us have our own tips and tricks for brewing the perfect batch.

  1. Ranch is a standard condiment.

Mike Mozart/Flickr When it comes to must-have condiments, it goes: ketchup, mustard, ranch. Seriously, ranch goes on just about everything.

So, what do you think? Are these all things Mississippians will defend to the death? Do you disagree with any of them? Can you think of any other hills people living in Mississippi are willing to die on? If so, tell us!
