Affordable Maryland Trips February 09, 2023 Sarah M. What are the best day trips in MD? Day trips are a wonderful way to explore on a dime, as you don’t need to spring for multiple meals or lodging (though there are plenty of affordable places to stay in Maryland, if you’re wondering!). Here are some of our favorite day trips in Maryland; and, as a bonus, many of these MD attractions are free to visit!

Wisp Resort. Looking to embrace winter in Maryland? It isn’t winter in MD without a trip to Wisp Resort in Western Maryland! This attraction is known for skiing, but its other winter activities include snowshoeing, snow tubing, and taking a ride on the alpine coaster.

Antietam National Battlefield. There’s a lot to explore at Antietam National Battlefield, 3,230 acres to be exact. Early spring is a great time to visit for those who prefer fewer crowds. Bundle up and take in the scenery and history that surrounds you.

Sherwood Gardens. One of the best spring day trips in Baltimore, Maryland, peak bloom is usually late April to early May and worth timing your visit to experience!

Calvert Cliffs State Park. Did you know that you can hunt for fossils, including shark teeth, in Southern Maryland? A favorite spot to do just that is at Calvert Cliffs State Park. This park is busiest during summertime, so we recommend visiting in early May or late August or even September.

Historic St. Mary’s City is a must for Marylanders at least once. Head to this former colonial town to learn what life was like in Maryland centuries ago. The historic ships are especially cool at this epic MD attraction!

Brookside Gardens just may be the most impressive garden in Maryland, covering 54 lush and lovely acres.

Walkersville Southern Railroad. Is there anything better than a train day trip in Maryland? We sure don’t think so! While this is a fun activity all year long, in November, Walkersville Southern Railroad hosts their beloved Santa trains, which is a MD family favorite. All aboard!
