Californians in general are no strangers to unusual concepts and fun ideas. The state is also home to plenty of themed restaurants, cafes, and venues, each designed to provide a one-of-a-kind experience. This is no less true of this awesome idea-turned-reality 2D comic-themed cafe in Southern California. Get ready for a truly surreal experience, and a really good cup of coffee.

The front entrance to Matte Black Coffee definitely gives you comic-book vibes and hints at the out-of-the-ordinary coffee house beyond the door.

While small in actual footprint, this coffee house makes a huge visual impact. Nearly everything that meets the eye is black and white, and looks as if it was hand drawn with a black marker - just like a comic.

himaja lakshmi/Google Local The Matte Black Coffee project has brought on such descriptions as “Mind-bending visuals” and “World Class immersive experience.” This is one place that needs to be experienced in person.

The founders of Matte Black do not rest solely on the creative design of the space to earn your praise. The drink menu is pretty creative, too, with cold brew latte flavors like Blueberry Pancake, French Toast, and White Chocolate Lavender. Unique non-coffee iced lattes, such as Turmeric and Blueberry Matcha, are also available.

This art-becomes-reality concept was brought about by a creative team whose aim was “bridging the worlds of hospitality, art, and coffee.” The iconic thick black lines and dots of pop art define the entire space and provide the backdrop for excellent service.

Matte Black has been called the “World’s first cold brew bar," just another way it sets itself apart from the caffeine crowd.

You have heard people say, “Do one thing and do it well.” Matte Black seems to take that advice to heart, specializing in a single signature coffee roast and cold drinks only.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t pick up a scrumptious pastry to go with your Double Chocolate Haze Cold Brew Latte.

Even the macarons are black and white (ish) cartoon style, not to mention delicious.

With coffee and a sweet treat in hand, you are invited to become a part of the cartoon world. The clever design and 2D perspective make it almost seem impossible that these are actual functioning seats and tables. Do we hear Insta-worthy photo op?

The attention to detail, right down to the “Caution - Wet Floor” sign, keeps the illusion alive.

Not only can you purchase Matte Black Signature Blend to enjoy at home, but there is a whole line of merchandise available, from shoes and tote bags to tumblers and puzzles. You can even purchase a coffee can filled, not with coffee, but with a black T-shirt and a white one. We think it’s a fabulous gift idea!
