Waterfalls are perhaps one of the most spectacular naturally occurring aquatic features in the world, but too often a hike to one of these watery behemoths is long and features an intense increase in elevation. Tennessee is home to many a waterfall, but Bald River Falls is one of the most accessible by car. In fact, you don’t even have to get out of the car to see it! Located on the state’s eastern side, this majestic waterfall is a true hidden gem and is well worth a visit with your nearest and dearest.
Bald River Falls is located on the Cherohala Skyway, which is a famous National Scenic Byway that runs between Tellico Plains, Tennessee, and Robbinsville, North Carolina.
Dzmitry (Dima) Parul / Flickr Construction of the road was completed in 1996 after a whopping 34 years of planning. The Cherohala Skyway has become a popular drive for tourists looking to peek at fall foliage ever since.
The name “Cherohala” is derived from the two national forests that the route passes through: the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests.

Nick / Flickr The 90-foot waterfall is considered one of the most spectacular water features on the Cherohala Skyway. You may find a gaggle of visitors jostling each other to take photographs on the weekends. You may want to come by during off-hours to try to beat the crowds! Do note that parking is limited.
At the end of the parking lot, you’ll find a trailhead that takes you right to the top of the falls where the view is unmatched.
Heather Holliday / Google If you’re wearing the right shoes and clothing, check out the Bald River Falls hike for a great way to add an additional bit of exercise to your day of waterfall fun. During the summertime you may even see a few folks splashing around at its base, enjoying a seasonal swimming hole.
Just a half-mile past Bald River Falls you’ll find Baby Falls, a tinier waterfall that features a camping area and picnic tables.
Mike Sladyk / AllTrails The entire area is thick with native plant life and small creatures that call the forests of Tennessee home, so keep an eye out and stay safe. During the autumn you’ll be treated to gorgeous colors, and in the springtime, wildflowers dot the stream’s shores.
If you happen to be a hiking enthusiast and have some time to spare, then you shouldn’t miss out on trekking the Bald River Falls trail.
Guillaume Capron / Flickr At almost nine miles in length, the route requires moderate effort and at least three hours out of your day. But visitors rave about its natural splendor and ease of access. The trail is used mainly for hiking, though backpackers and campers also employ its use. Pay close attention to the route along the Bald River Falls trail as the path isn’t consistently marked.
