Oklahoma is known far and wide for our oil, but not many know about our quirky oil claim to fame. Barnsdall, a small town in Eastern Oklahoma, is home to the world’s only Main Street oil well. This one-of-a-kind attraction is also a historic site and a fun place to visit if you’re looking for a roadside attraction in Oklahoma to admire. The Barnsdall Main Street Oil Well is located in the 800 block of West Main Street. It’s situated smack dab in the middle of the road in a residential area.

The well was completed in 1914 and remained active until the 1960s. At maximum production, this well could have produced 8 to 10 barrels of oil per day. The depth of the well is 1,771 feet.

It is known as the “World’s Only Main Street Oil Well” and you’ll see a plaque on the front of it stating this claim to fame. It stands only about eight feet tall and is surrounded by a black fence.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and is now a popular roadside attraction in the Sooner State.

Barnsdall is located in Osage County and is home to only about 1,000 residents. The Bank of Bigheart is the only other town structure that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
