In addition to outdoor recreation, many of the state parks also offer educational programs and events. These programs can help visitors learn about the history and ecology of the area, as well as how to protect and conserve its natural resources. What is the largest state forest in West Virginia? Seneca State Forest makes up 12,884 acres of beautiful woodlands and is the oldest and largest state forest in WV. The forest offers more than 23 miles of trails, ranging from easy to rugged, that wind through the woods and offers stunning views of the river valley below. Camping is allowed in designated areas. In addition to its recreational opportunities, Seneca State Forest is also home to a variety of plant and animal life. The forest’s diverse ecosystems provide a habitat for many different species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Visitors can often see deer, squirrels, and wild turkeys roaming through the woods, and the clear waters of the river are home to fish such as trout and bass.
