While South Carolina is a state that doesn’t see very much snow typically during any given winter, by the numbers the town that gets the most snow, not surprisingly, is found in the upstate area. And it just so happens to also be a great place for a winter getaway in South Carolina! Let’s take a virtual trip and get a little taste of this charming town.

Greer is a town north of Greenville in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, located mostly in Greenville County with a small portion in Spartanburg County. It averages a little over four inches of snow annually, as listed on the ranking site, HomeSnacks.

The James House Inn would be an excellent place to stay, an elegant circa 1921 B&B located in the historic downtown area of Greer. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has four guest rooms.

The inn also features a boxwood garden and lily pond with koi and a water fountain.

Once you’re checked in at the inn, venture out to the Lake Walk Tiny Home Community at 301 Simply Less Circle, 2901-2983 North Highway 101 and grab some coffee at this unique, adorable spot with a firepit perfect for warming up on a cold winter day.

Take some time to enjoy downtown Greer, sometimes referred to as Greer Station.

It’s beautiful especially at night with string lights crisscrossing over the streets. You’ll find restaurants, retail shops, lofts, art galleries, bars, and historic buildings, some of which go back to the early 20th century. The entire downtown district is included on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you don’t find somewhere to get lunch downtown or if you love a good barbecue buffet, head to Mutt’s BBQ at 101 West Road for a delicious meal. It’s so good sauce isn’t even needed unless you just prefer it or love a certain type!

Then you’ve gotta see Greer City Park, a 12-acre park that’s open year-round and has become a favorite space for both locals and visitors.

The park features walking paths, a scenic gazebo in a pond, a playground with rubber turf, a picnic shelter, swinging benches, lots of green space, an amphitheater, and a fountain that dances to music at night.

Another of Greer’s outdoor attractions is its William Few Bridge Historical Marker.

Pat Davis/Google Maps The Few Family was among the earliest upper Greenville County area settlers. A Few family descendant served as a soldier in the War of 1812, another was one of the first to lay down his life for the cause of liberty in the American Revolution, and still another was a member of the Continental Congress from the State of Georgia and a signer of the Constitution of the United States. William Few lived on part of the hillside by the bridge until 1856, when he died at age 85. Some of his descendants still own that hillside.

There are some wonderful gift shops in Greer, including Peace of Mind Designs located in DTS Rents at 207 South Buncombe Road. It’s the best place to find a unique gift or holiday decor and carries some of the whimsical “every day’s a holiday” Glitterville Studios collection, which is part of Oprah’s Favorite Things!

After such a full day of exploring Greer, your stomach will probably be growling for some nourishment! Dellaventura’s Ristorante and Pizza is an excellent option for some of the best Italian fare you’ve ever tasted.

The sauces are freshly made, the bread is perfect, crisp on the outside and fresh and soft inside, and portions are generous.
