The Lake Ponder Trail in Crowley’s Ridge State Park in northeastern Arkansas is a paved loop of less than a half-mile and takes only about 10 minutes. But what’s the rush? The views of the water, native plants, and buildings that are nearly a century old make this leisurely stroll enjoyable any time of year. The bonus is the discovery of the spring that feeds the lake, making this one of the best short and scenic hikes in Arkansas.

The trees reflected in the water illustrate how the views of Lake Ponder vary, even during a short, half-mile loop.

Crowley’s Ridge State Park is 11 miles southwest of the town of Paragould. A visitors center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Lake Ponder Trail is the only wheelchair-accessible trail in the park, but four other trails are nearly as short and easy. The Dancing Rabbit Trail leads to two swinging bridges; the Walcott Lake, Spider Creek and Amphitheater Trails also are popular. For more information about visiting the park, see the Arkansas State Parks website.
