Once upon a time, it seemed like everyone’s weekend kicked off at the same place: Blockbuster Video. Founded in 1985, Blockbuster was THE place to rent videos (and, later, DVDs) and, at its peak, boasted nearly 10,000 locations worldwide. Sadly, with the popularity of streaming (and before that, movies mailed to you) came the demise of this entertainment giant, with only one standalone store remaining. Since most of us haven’t seen a Colorado Blockbuster in more than ten years, you can imagine our surprise when these blue VHS dispensers began popping up around the Centennial State:
Welcome to FreeBlockbuster, which is on a mission to “combat the myth of scarcity by providing free entertainment to as many people as possible.”
FreeBlockbuster
Billed as a Free Little Library for movies, the FreeBlockbuster movement was born in 2018 in California by a former Blockbuster employee and avid VHS collector who opened the first box less than a year later.

Since its inception, FreeBlockbuster dispensers have been popping up around the country and the world, including five Colorado locations around Denver, Boulder, and Littleton.

Do you want to bring even more FreeBlockbusters to the Centennial State? Consider opening your own location via an old newspaper box (or by crafting your own box!) and adding it to their map.

Can you think of a better way to repurpose all those old movies you have lying around? Neither can we!
