Virginia is home to some of the most impressive – and historic – buildings in the country. Visit Williamsburg, for example, and you can tour an entire collection of homes and other landmarks that were built centuries ago. Today’s featured spot is a gorgeous mansion in Virginia tucked away in another historic city: Alexandria. One of the core founders of Alexandria, John Carlyle purchased two lots strategically located between the Potomac River and Market Square in 1749.

Soon after, construction began on this Georgian-style stone mansion. On August 1, 1753, he and his wife Sarah Fairfax Carlyle moved into their new home together. That same evening, Sarah gave birth to their first child, which inspired John to describe their new chapter as “a fine beginning.”
Carlyle House Historic Park / Google The house was built by enslaved carpenters, masons, and joiners. Many enslaved African Americans worked and lived near the Carlyle House at that time.
In 1976, NOVA Parks acquired the house and nearby apartments as part of the Bicentennial Celebration. Today, the home is an active museum that has received the distinction of being part of the American Alliance of Museums.

Today, visitors are invited to visit and explore what life was like in pre-Revolutionary Alexandria. Much of the home has been beautifully preserved and restored.
