We know West Virginia is a great place to live. This list isn’t to take away from that, but to point out that there are dangers in any state. There is some incredibly dangerous wildlife in West Virginia, not to mention many other things to worry about. Luckily with our list, you’ll be thoroughly prepared for the dangers. Here are some things in West Virginia that could kill you if you’re not careful.

  1. Snakes

West Virginia Blue/Flickr West Virginia has 2 types of venomous snakes: the northern copperhead and the timber rattlesnakes. The majority of bites from venomous snakes in WV come from copperheads, but deaths are actually rare. No deaths from copperheads have been recorded in the last 30 years. Very few deaths were recorded from rattlesnakes too. So fortunately, there’s very little chance that you’ll die from a snake encounter, but you’ll still want to watch out for these dangerous animals in West Virginia.

  1. Deer

James Marvin Phelps/Flickr You may not think of deer as terrifying, but they are when you’re driving and they’re coming toward your car. And they can be really dangerous. Based on reports from some news outlets, deer colliding with cars cause around 200 deaths per year in the United States. And with deer overpopulation being a constant issue in the country, you’ll want to keep an eye out.

  1. Winter

Puddin Tain / Flickr From the cold temperatures to the ice roads, winter can be dangerous and even lethal in West Virginia. Ice falling on someone’s head may be the end of a common riddle, but it could also be your fate if you’re not careful.

  1. Black widow spiders

Marc Matteo/Flickr West Virginia is home to black widow spiders. While these spiders are poisonous to humans, it is extremely rare for a human to die from their bites. (But it’s possible). And let’s be honest, spiders can be creepy and gross. Do you really want to risk it?

  1. Black bears

Ian Matchett/Flickr Black bear attacks are rare, but they do happen and occasionally they’re fatal. Mother bears, like the one pictured here, tend to be more aggressive in order to protect their cubs. Some bears can even learn how to open doors and break into homes so you have to be vigilant in your preparation against them. Considering finding a training course for dealing with bear encounters.

  1. Coal mining accidents

MSHA/Flickr West Virginia unfortunately has a history of mining accidents and explosions that caused countless deaths.

  1. Floods

E.A. Friel, United States Geological Survey/Flickr West Virginia has frequent flash flooding, especially during the spring time. Floods can be deadly, too. An average of 75 people have died in the United States each year between 2004 and 2013, according to the National Weather Service. Keep a close eye on weather reports and don’t go out when there are flood warnings.

  1. Drug overdoses

Gatis Gribust/Flickr Unfortunately, West Virginia leads the country for the rate of drug overdose deaths. If you know anyone who needs help, do what you can to find them support.

  1. Car accidents

Arslan / Flickr West Virginia ranked eighth in the country for states that are the most dangerous for drivers, according to a study published in 2012. Consider that before you get behind the wheel!

  1. Cancer

Uniquecooking Cancer is the leading cause of death in West Virginia, and it is terrifying. Unfortunately our understanding of cancer and how to prevent it is still minimal, but touch base with your doctor about preemptive checks and be vigilant about taking care of your health.

West Virginia has just as many dangers as any other state, it’s no more dangerous to live in. But seeing them all laid out can be a bit nerve wracking. It certainly makes you think twice about some of your decisions. Which of these 10 things do you find the most terrifying? What else in West Virginia terrifies you?
