Shawnee National Forest Cabins October 27, 2022 Sarah M. What are some things to do while in Shawnee National Forest? Once you’ve settled on a “home base” for your adventures in Shawnee National Forest – we love the Rustic Hideaway Cabins as well as these cozy little cottages – the world really is yours. Where to start? Well, the number one thing we’re going to recommend that you do is hit the trails. There are many, many amazing hikes in Shawnee National Forest, from the Rim Rock National Recreation Trail to the aptly-named Inspiration Trail. Illinois’ Shawnee National Forest is also home to the Pomona Natural Bridge Trail, a 0.3-mile loop trail. This scenic trail is accessible year round and is a popular spot for an afternoon walk. The bridge spans some 90 feet, making the overlook where you catch a glimpse well worth the moderate hike to get there – it’s one of the coolest natural arches in the state, in fact! Next, head to Garden of the Gods, the most marvelous natural wonder in the state of Illinois. Another short hike, the Garden of the Gods Recreational Trail is just half a mile long. It’s an incredible trail for the view alone. You can also walk among the large, 320-million-year-old rocks. People sometimes climb the rock formations, too. If you choose to do this, remember to always use caution. Shawnee National Forest is a glorious place to explore, and, with a cozy cabin to return home to, you’re in for an amazing Illinois getaway!
