Here in Maine, there’s nothing sadder than packing the beach chairs and putting away the bathing suits at the end of August. In fact, many of us endure the harsh winters just for the few months of beach days we get every year. But, this year instead of crying into our sand pails we’ve tried to find new ways to make sure we’re enjoying the waterfront. Coastal Maine in winter might just be our new favorite way to enjoy the off-season.
- Ocean Path Trail, Acadia National Park
alltrails.com Undoubtedly one of the most beloved coastal trails in the state, Ocean Path in Acadia offers the quintessential rocky views we’ve all come to expect in Maine. The route is about 2.2 miles each way and leads to Thunder Hole, Monument Cove and Otter Cliffs. Ocean Path, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, USA
- Bluffs Area Trails, Roque Bluffs State Park, Roque Bluffs
Steve Zanotti / alltrails.com Undoubtedly, this out-of-the-way state park in northern Maine offers some of the most relaxing walks in the state. While this looped trail is only about two miles, there are plenty of views including those of the forest and the water. Roque Bluffs, ME 04654, USA
- Crescent Beach State Park, Cape Elizabeth
Just Don’t / Google While this is certainly a great beach in the summer, things here are even more lovely when the weather gets cold. Crescent Beach State Park offers trails that meander through both coastal forests and saltwater coves. The network is over two miles which will keep you busy for a while. But, be sure to make time to find your way to the beach capping off your adventure with seaside views. Crescent Beach State Park, 109 Bowery Beach Rd, Cape Elizabeth, ME 04107, USA
- Spring Point Shoreway, South Portland
gary janson / Maine Trail Finder This short walk is aabout one-mile walk each way and offers beautiful views of Casco Bay. The route runs from Fisherman’s Point towards Willard Beach and includes attractions like Bug Light Park. The route will take you through the campus of Southern Maine Community College, too. Also, keep an eye out for Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse and Fort Preble along the way. Spring Point Shoreway Trail, South Portland, ME 04106, USA
- Ferry Beach State Park, Saco
Jesus Magana / alltrails.com Ferry Beach State Park is just two miles from the center of Old Orchard Beach, making it a great place to visit in the summer. But we think the winter is even better! With virtually no crowds and views that go on for days, the trails here are perfect. Try the Ferry Beach, Camp Ellis Breakwater trail which will lead you right to the waves! Ferry Beach State Park, 95 Bayview Rd, Saco, ME 04072, USA
- Reid State Park, Georgetown
Annette Kindler / Google The 3.5-mile loop trail in one of Maine’s most beautiful state parks offers the views we all love so much. In fact, visitors consider the park to offer some of the most quintessential views in the state. And, it’s particularly special to those who live here year-round since things are much so much quieter in the winter. The views are sweeping and the trail is relatively flat, making for a leisurely and undeniably beautiful walk. Reid State Park, 375 Seguinland Rd, Georgetown, ME 04548, USA
- Old Orchard Beach
aerugino / Flickr Despite the summer being the state’s most popular season, we’ve got a lot of love for the off-season. While it’s virtually impossible to find parking at Old Orchard Beach when it’s hot, the winter offers wide open spaces! And that’s why we think simply strolling along the sand here is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Though there are no formal trails here, make your way from the pier and back and you’ll have enjoyed some of the best of the Maine outdoors. Old Orchard Beach, ME, USA
- Barrier Beach Trail at Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm, Wells
MariemilieG82 / TripAdvisor Wells Reserve is just one of the many coastal walks to enjoy in Wells. But, it’s also one of our favorites! The Barrier Beach Trail is flat and leads straight to the beach, but any time spent at this coastal reserve is worthwhile. Wells Reserve at Laudholm, 342 Laudholm Farm Rd, Wells, ME 04090, USA
