Trek back in time with a hike along the Villines Homestead Trail! Short and sweet, the ½-mile trail leads to an abandoned homestead from the 1800s. Though dilapidated, the buildings that fill the old homestead offer a glimpse into the past, making the trail a history buff’s haven and one of our all-time favorite abandoned places hikes in Arkansas! Which hiking trails in Arkansas call your name the most often? Let us know.

Villines Homestead Trail is near Ponca.

Tanya Reddin/All Trails The 1/2-mile out-and-back trail winds through the now-abandoned 1882 homestead of James Villines and his wife, Sarah Arbaugh.

Hidden among towering trees, the homestead isn’t visible from the road; however, it couldn’t be easier to access.

Doug Neidholt/All Trails Make sure to wear good, closed-toed shoes, and bring along enough water - despite the trail being short and sweet, the ruins are much too cool to resist exploring, and hydration is always important.

To begin the hike, you’ll cross the Ponca Low-Water Bridge. From there, simply follow the path.

James Catalfamo/All Trails You’ll feel like you’re wandering through time and into the past; if these trees could talk, what tales would they tell? They’ve been here since this homestead was alive and well, at least.

Eventually, you’ll come to a fork in the path. You can actually go either way, as both lead to the homestead.

elka king/All Trails Be sure to immerse yourself in your surroundings for the full experience. What do you hear? What do you smell? Admire the visual beauty of the woods and you’ll appreciate hiking in a whole new way.

The abandoned homestead is made up of several buildings, including a double-pen log cabin, smokehouse, root cellar, barn, and outhouse.

Scott Fergel/All Trails It’s an intriguing reminder of how life used to be, a long time ago.

Most of the buildings are open, so you can peer inside the historic structures.

Doug Neidholt/All Trails Few things are more fun than traipsing around abandoned places, and it’s even better when they’re wide-open and ready to explore like this one is.

Signage accompanies several of the buildings, providing background info on the homestead as well as its former residents.

Tangie Hutchinson/All Trails Learn about life way back when, at a time when things were a little rougher than they are now.

Historic buildings are just one facet of the trail, though. The other is natural beauty, including a small waterfall.

alan reilly/All Trails Of course, we’ll have been busy admiring that this entire time. It’s one of the reasons we came out!

As if it couldn’t get any better, the Villines Homestead Trail is a pretty easy trek. Not only is it just ½ mile long, but it has very little elevation gain.
