The retreat of giant glaciers during the last Ice Age sculpted the land of Wisconsin in many beautiful ways. In Sauk County, you can find a place sculpted by ancient glaciers that’s simply incredible. Pewit’s Nest State Natural Area is a gorgeous natural preserve that holds a hidden place that’s definitely worth seeking out. You can reach this magical gem with just a short hike, and the scene you’ll come across is as refreshing as it is beautiful. Here’s what you need to know about the great hike to one of the most gorgeous Wisconsin waterfalls out there:

Pewit’s Nest is located just west of Baraboo and northwest of Devil’s Lake State Park, another simply gorgeous preserve that’s also a product of glaciers that were once in the area.

Alltrails / Derrik Mueller If you’ve got the time, definitely visit both, as Devil’s Lake State Park is one of the best parks in Wisconsin.

This may be a hidden waterfall in Wisconsin, but the trail to Pewit’s Nest is fairly easy to follow. It’s only about a mile long. You’ll head down a winding road surrounded by a forest of red cedar, white pine, hemlock, and yellow birch.

The trail descends into a glacier-carved gorge. The interesting and easy hike isn’t much of a challenge, so it’s a great option for families with small kids or novice hikers who aren’t looking for an all-day trek.

You may be wondering why this place is called Pewit’s Nest. It was named after an early settler who had a home up on the rocks that happened to resemble a nest.

Alltrails / Cody Blum The home is long gone, as is a water-powered mill that once churned away here.

Skillet Creek cuts through the soft sandstone. You’ll find a series of waterfalls and pot holes here. Various trails in the area will take you to spots where you can cool off by dipping your toes in the creek’s cool waters.

At Pewit’s Nest, you can wade into the water here. This hidden swimming hole in Wisconsin is one of our favorite summer spots in the state. Even if you don’t want to swim, the natural area is still well worth a visit.

Alltrails / Diane Whisman The once-popular activity of cliff jumping is now prohibited. Many people have been seriously hurt from jumping from the cliffs. Be careful in the area, and of course take all trash with you so as to leave the area for future generations to enjoy.

This natural area is well-worth a visit. The views here are unforgettable, and it’s a great place for scenic photos. Pewit’s Nest State Natural Area is open daily from 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. Be sure to wear good walking or hiking shoes, as the trail can get muddy in spots, especially after rain. When visiting in warmer months, make sure to apply bug spray before heading out. Looking for some more hidden places in the Wisconsin?
