One of the hallmarks of the Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site is the amount of information provided to visitors. The nature of the site also requires some imagination, picturing how the mounds were built and how the Native American residents lived there roughly 800 years ago. Many travelers remark about how they were pleasantly surprised to stumble onto this historic site in Kentucky.

Tucked away in the town of Wickliffe, in the southwest corner of Kentucky, the Mounds illustrate the archaeological approach of what is categorized as the Mississipian culture that occupied the site from roughly 1100 to 1350 AD.

Interpretive markers are helpful to visitors, helping them understand how the area was founded and how the Mississipian culture lives on, all these centuries later.

The Woods Walk Trail is only a 200-yard loop, but it is filled with many species of birds, varying by the season. The Pileated Woodpecker, known to be elusive, is occasionally heard and seen in the mornings.

The exhibits in the main museum gallery provide a glimpse of how the Mississippians lived and worked, using pottery and stone tools that created products used for trade. The enclosed excavations bring the culture to life and the museum features activities for children.
