It never gets old featuring the spectacular hidden beauty in Oklahoma. The state’s topography is so diverse – it’s amazing all the beautiful places tucked away waiting to be discovered in the Sooner State. One such place is Heavener Runestone Park, a fairytale-like setting filled with lush landscapes, epic scenery, waterfalls, hieroglyphics, and nature trails galore. Come see why this breathtaking park is home to some of the all-time best hikes in Oklahoma – it’s an adventure worth having!

The Heavener Runestone is one of the most visited tourist attractions in southeastern Oklahoma.

Nicholas Harkreader/Google Photos It’s a 55-acre day-use park with a beautiful waterfall that flows freely below a rock formation and is surrounded by lush greenery. It’s a small park that is loaded with mystery, scenic views, and nature trails.

There are two short trails in the park: Runestone Loop and Heavener Runestone Park Nature Trail - both of which are under a half-mile in length.

The moment you enter this fairy-tale spot, you’ll be overtaken by the beauty that surrounds you.

Tayia Underhill/Google Photos It really does feel like something out of a storybook instead of a place in little old Okie. It’s weird, but in an amazing way.

There are gorgeous rock bluffs in the park too that are beautifully positioned overhead.

Rob Bieloh/Google Photos The geology of the park is intriguing and well worth some admiration.

To hike to the waterfall, take the Runestone Loop - a 0.2-mile moderately trafficked loop trail that is rated as moderate.

Rob Bieloh/Google Photos When it comes to waterfall hikes in Oklahoma, this one is one of our favorites… for obvious reasons.

The park is one of the most unusual sites in the southern U.S. due to some mysterious carvings on the side of the rocks on-site.

HeavenerRunestone/Facebook Although not proven, most people believe these carvings were left by the Vikings over 1,000 years ago. Nobody’s really sure where they came from, but they sure are cool.

This place is so peaceful and you’ll want to visit it as soon as possible.

And if you’re looking to extend your day trip, bring the tent along and pitch it in one of the primitive campsites available!

If you love exploring abandoned places in Oklahoma, then there’s a castle in the southern part of the state you have to check out. Located in Turner Falls Park, Collings Castle is an abandoned castle tucked away in the hills overlooking Turner Falls.
