Colorado is considered by some a “weird” state, maybe deservedly so, but some places still manage to be quirkier than others. While most of our towns have unique attractions and facets, one town, in particular, is being called the most unusual. The small, statutory town of Crestone, Colorado. Is Crestone, Colorado, weird? Located in southcentral Colorado, Crestone is home to an estimated 86 residents and the title of “The Most Unusual Town” in the Centennial State.

As per Earn Spend Live, which evaluated places that “hold stories, traditions, and monuments that are sometimes a little off the beaten path,” the small Colorado community was a no-brainer, citing “Crestone is a place where you can let your inner hippie run free.”

How does such a small town earn such a groovy reputation? It begins with its all-in-one Zen center, Buddhist center, and Hindu temple, which just so happens to house the only funeral pyre in the country.

In addition to this place of religion, the “New Age religious capital of the world” is also home to the castle-like Crestone Ziggurat (a public place for meditation and prayer that was built by Najeeb Halaby, the father of Queen Noor of Jordan, in 1978) as well as multiple new-age events.
