The Grand Canyon State has quite a few caves, but not many also boast crystal-clear, sapphire waters. This hidden alcove can be found at the end of Bob Bear Trail in Arizona, and it truly belongs on everyone’s bucket list. It leads to an incredible place known as Preacher Canyon Cave, and trust us – it’s worth every bit of effort to reach.
Fossil Creek Wilderness Area is an extremely large nature preserve with many hidden gems to uncover, but we’ll be zeroing in on one in particular: a secret cave near the waterfall. It resides at the end of an eight-mile hike, but the effort is absolutely worth the reward.

We actually recommend getting started in the early afternoon rather than morning, for reasons which will become clear soon. Excruciating as it sounds, the first portion of the trail is entirely downhill. That coupled with cooler temperatures makes for a surprisingly enjoyable trek.

At some point, you’ll begin to hear the faint sound of rushing water. It continues to crescendo with each additional step until, eventually, the majestic falls reveal themselves fully.

After spending a few obligatory moments in awe of the scene, wade through the creek as canyon walls rise up all around you. You’ll be in disbelief at how clear the water is - fish can be seen swimming to and fro in every direction.

Upon catching a glimpse of the crystal-clear water, you’ll swear you’ve been transported to Hawaii. When the late-afternoon sun hits just right (see why we recommended going at this time?), some spots give off a turquoise shimmer while others boast an alluring sapphire.

Tucked away in this clearing is a hidden grotto that’s easy to miss if you aren’t looking for it. At the very bottom of the rock face is a tiny outcropping just spacious enough to squeeze into.

Another reason early evening is the best time to visit concerns the hike back. You’ll be climbing uphill this time around, so not having the midday sun beating down overhead is such a blessing.
