For starters, there is a lighthouse on the island that has been around since 1858, which makes it a true treasure on the island.

In addition, the island served as a camp for captured Seminoles at the very end of the Third Seminole War.

The island eventually was occupied in the Civil War by the Union Navy and then became an active fort until 1923 during the Spanish-American War.

Visitors can hike the historic trails throughout Egmont Key, just southwest of Fort DeSoto Beach, enjoying the plaques and stories throughout time.

It still remains a daily secluded hike so it is a great chance to explore nature without being overwhelmed by crowds. If you are lucky you may even spot a few dolphins playing in the channels. Juniper Springs Recreation Area Trail, Silver Springs, FL: Short and sweet, this 0.8-mile trail is still one of the most scenic hikes in Florida. Boardwalks and bridges, pools of crystal clear water, and the lush surroundings of the Ocala State Forest will satisfy your love of nature. Pine Island Trail, Pine Island, FL: In the lush tropical forest of Blue Springs State Park you’ll find this 4.5-mile trail with a surprise treat on a hot and humid Florida afternoon - a natural spring swimming hole. Rainbow Springs Trail, Dunnellon, FL: Rainbow Springs State Park is another Florida gem with several trails to choose from.
