Hiking through nature is an experience unto itself. But when you’re able to hike through nature and also immerse yourself in history, that’s an elevated outdoor experience that many might not know exists in Florida. Perfect for a trip with the kids that doubles as an educational opportunity, or simply a solo venture out into nature to immerse yourself in Florida history, this hike is for you. But be warned, some say this is one of the most creepy hikes in Florida. The next time you’re in the St. Petersburg area, feel free to check out the Egmont Key State Park in Florida. When you do, you can determine if it is one of the best hikes in FL or one of the creepiest.
There is so much beauty in visiting Egmont Key State Park in St. Petersburg, Florida.

But the first thing you have to do to get to the natural beauty is to take a ferry - this is an island after all.

Once you’re there, you’ll be able to hike around the island to your heart’s content. The history here knows no bounds.
Albert Katryan/Google
For starters, there is a lighthouse on the island that has been around since 1858, which makes it a true treasure on the island.

In addition, the island served as a camp for captured Seminoles at the very end of the Third Seminole War.

The island eventually was occupied in the Civil War by the Union Navy and then became an active fort until 1923 during the Spanish-American War.

Visitors can hike the historic trails throughout Egmont Key, just southwest of Fort DeSoto Beach, enjoying the plaques and stories throughout time.

In addition, there is so much beauty to see here, you’ll likely want to set up shop with a towel and an umbrella and get in some suntanning or swimming, too.

More hiking trails in Florida February 16, 2023 Chris Muras What are the best Florida hikes? Many people come to Florida for the outstanding beaches and family attractions, but there are some pretty amazing hiking trails as well. Here are a few of the best FL hikes to explore:
Econfina Creek Water Management Area, Youngstown, FL: With 18 miles of trails to explore this area is pretty special. One of the coolest spots is Two Penny Bridge which crosses Econfina Creek. Lovers Key State Park, Fort Myers Beach, FL: For quite some time this park was only accessible by boat, it is now much easier to get to. It still remains a daily secluded hike so it is a great chance to explore nature without being overwhelmed by crowds. If you are lucky you may even spot a few dolphins playing in the channels. Juniper Springs Recreation Area Trail, Silver Springs, FL: Short and sweet, this 0.8-mile trail is still one of the most scenic hikes in Florida. Boardwalks and bridges, pools of crystal clear water, and the lush surroundings of the Ocala State Forest will satisfy your love of nature. Pine Island Trail, Pine Island, FL: In the lush tropical forest of Blue Springs State Park you’ll find this 4.5-mile trail with a surprise treat on a hot and humid Florida afternoon - a natural spring swimming hole. Rainbow Springs Trail, Dunnellon, FL: Rainbow Springs State Park is another Florida gem with several trails to choose from. Perhaps one of the best Florida hikes is the 2.1-mile out-and-back Rainbow Springs Trail. After your first half of the trek, you will get to enjoy a nice soothing waterfall to enjoy before heading back.
