Hike To An Incredible Sand Cave In Virginia

Virginia is known for many things: gorgeous mountains, world-class hiking trails, stunning rivers, and caverns. But sand caves? Those aren’t typically associated with Virginia’s terrain. That’s why it’s so exciting to discover one of the most beautiful sand caves in the U.S. right here in Virginia. Located in Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, this sand cave in Virginia is nothing short of incredible. And relatively few people have seen it in person!

Cumberland Gap National Historic Park is a stunning destination situated where Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky converge. Cumberland Gap was once a gap in the mountain range where pioneers would expand their travels westward. Today, it’s synonymous with breathtaking views and otherworldly landmarks.

Perhaps one of the most remarkable natural wonders in the area is the sand cave.

The cave is located within the national park; however, the most direct way to reach this destination is via the Thomas Walker Civic Park in Ewing, Virginia.

From there, hikers will follow a 3.9-mile trail to the cave’s opening. And prepare to be absolutely awe-struck!

Looking up at the ceiling, you may notice hues of gold, green, and red. These colors are the result of millions of years of erosion.

One thing to note is that you’ll want sturdy shoes. There will likely be mud – and lots of sand! – on the trail.

After you’ve spent time marveling at this wonder, you can either return back to the trailhead or continue onward for a little over a mile to see White Rocks overlook.
