Each winter, like most other birds, eagles migrate. However, unlike other migrating birds, eagles don’t migrate because of cold weather. Instead, eagles migrate in search of food.

You see, fish are the main part of a bald eagle’s diet; however, they can’t retrieve fish from frozen rivers. So, thousands of eagles winter along the Mississippi River, which doesn’t freeze completely due to its turbulent waters.

Additionally, as water goes through the locks and over the dams of the river — so do fish. As the fish are tumbled about, they become stunned, making them easy prey for eagles soaring above.
