In the winter in Connecticut, every few years our pretty state is blessed with these visitors from the far North during the cold months of the year. The ghostly white snowy owls with their yellow eyes have been spotted in the air and on the ground in the Nutmeg State. You will be amazed by the gorgeous wildlife in Connecticut once you go looking for it. Keep your eyes open, you never know where or when you might spot one of these hauntingly beautiful creatures. They have impressive camouflage, so look carefully so you won’t miss seeing them in wild.
The Connecticut shoreline has seen the most snowy owl activity, but these majestic birds have been spotted as far inland as Bloomfield and Manchester. They have excellent taste in locations!

The snowy owls are often hard to spot as they blend in with sand as well as snow. You can see how impressive their natural camouflage is.

They also enjoy hiding in the tall coastal grasses that populate the dunes and marshes of Connecticut beaches. It looks like snowy owls enjoy an ocean view as much as we do.

One of the recent times these magnificent birds were seen in such numbers in Connecticut was during the winter of 2013-2014. The flood of owls into our area is referred to as an irruption.

The irruptions happen when food is plentiful and hunting is good in the north. This abundance of food leads to more young owls surviving and an increase in population.

The majority of the snowy owls that have flown into Connecticut are young owls that have probably been pushed out of hunting grounds by adults.

These visitors travel more than 1,000 miles to make it to Connecticut. They hail from Northern Canada and the Artic.

Most of the owl sightings have been along the Connecticut coast. Snowy owls have been seen at Hammonasett Beach, Stratford Point, Stonington Point, Short Beach, and Long Beach to name a few spots.

The owls have also been seen inland in cities such as Bristol and Hartford. These sightings are less frequent and always a delightful surprise for city residents, who definitely don’t get to see gorgeous animals like this every day.

If you take a walk along the shoreline during the next few weeks, keep your eyes wide open for a glimpse of these unusual and beautiful birds. And if you live inland, you never know when you might cross paths with a snowy visitor from the North.

Just remember, if you do spot one of these treasured owls, don’t disturb them by getting too close, and don’t try to feed them. They are still wild animals, after all.
