A north drive north of Milwaukee will take you to another world. Lion’s Den Gorge is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Wisconsin, but it’s somewhat overshadowed by more well-known state parks; in fact some locals have not even made the trek to this magical park. It’s well worth the journey, however. While the gorge is pretty and wild, the hike there is also spectacular, tracing a dramatic Lake Michigan cliff. Here’s what you need to know about this special park.
Lion’s Den Gorge is one of the last undeveloped stretches of bluff land between Mequon and Port Washington.

It’s an incredible area that’s protected forever as an Ozaukee County park. It covers 73 acres and it’s laced with trails and boardwalks.

When you arrive at the park, you might want to head straight for the lake. The sweeping view will take your breath away – if you run into other hikers, there’s a good chance some will be taking pictures. The view extends all the way to Port Washington

But keep hiking. If you follow the trail north along the lakeshore, you’ll arrive at the gorge. A small wooden bridge will lead you to the other side.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there. Just beyond the bridge, a wooden staircase leads down, and down some more, along the edge of the gorge.

A final surprise awaits. The staircase deposits you onto a wild and rocky beach that’s at the base of the gorge – enjoy a hike along the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline and relax before the climb back up to the car.

Lion’s Den Gorge was actually named after an animal that escaped from the Milwaukee County Zoo and spent several nights in the area. You’re unlikely to see any lions but you may encounter some beautiful birds in the preserve. Learn more on the Ozaukee County website. After leaving the gorge, make plans to visit Port Washington – it’s the perfect day trip destination.
