Few would argue that Southern California’s stunning beaches are worth visiting, but when it comes to deserts and impressive rock formations, tourists usually think of places like Utah and Arizona. That being said, an underrated part of this state’s natural beauty lies in the desert. In fact, not many people, even locals, know that there is an amazing slot canyon in Southern California that resembles the famous Antelope Canyon.

About a two-hour drive from San Diego, the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a fascinating expanse of desert landscape. Sunrises are particularly beautiful in the desert.

This State Park is filled with features that beg to be explored, including rugged badlands, spring-fed fan palm oases, wildflowers, and epic rock formations, including The Slot, a narrow rock canyon that looks a lot like the popular canyon that draws thousands of visitors to Arizona.

As you enter The Slot, the path narrows between the sandstone canyon walls.

Slot canyons like this are fairly rare as it takes a specific combination of rushing water and limestone or sandstone rock in order for the deep canyon to form.

It is hard not to marvel at the layered sandstone walls that rise up the sides of The Slot.

As light passes down through the top of the canyon, it creates beautiful shadows and seems to make the colors of the rock change.

At some points along the trail, The Slot walls are so close that it requires a bit of effort - even turning sideways - to squeeze through the narrow passages.

The slot canyon is deep and the walls loom high overhead. Don’t forget to look up or you will miss other rock formations like this natural bridge.

Exiting The Slot, the path continues through a wider part of the canyon which is as interesting and scenic as the narrow slot.

The areas surrounding the slot canyon also have much to offer, including stone arches and tiny caves. Make sure you bring your camera!
