It’s hard to imagine today, but thousands of years ago, a large area of Wisconsin was completely underwater. Due to the melting glaciers, huge amounts of water were released into what’s now Wisconsin, forming Glacial Lake Wisconsin. For about 3,000 years, this lake’s cold, churning waters sculpted the land, and when the lake finally dried up, it left something remarkable behind. It’s waiting for you at Mill Bluff State Park, one of Wisconsin’s unique state parks.

This beautiful Wisconsin state park is located in eastern Monroe and western Juneau counties, near the village of Camp Douglas. It’s an easy day trip from places like Madison, Eau Claire, and La Crosse.

If you enjoy nature photography, you’ll love this place. Camel’s Bluff resembles the humps of a camel. Cleopatra’s Needle is a spire that reaches skyward. The bluffs have long served as landmarks to travelers and settlers in Wisconsin.
