When it came to watching movies in the late 40s and 50s, drive-in theaters used to be all the rage. Today, however, most of these theaters have either been abandoned or torn down. There are a few remaining drive-in theaters in Alabama, including King Drive-In. To learn all about this drive-in theater, take a look below.
King Drive-In is located right off Highway 43 in Russellville, Alabama. It was originally owned by A.L. King, the theater’s namesake.

This drive-in theater has been showing movies since 1949, making it Alabama’s oldest continuously operating drive-in theater.

After arriving and paying, you’ll park in the open field between the poles. If you ever watched a movie at this historic drive-in theater during its earlier years, you’ll probably remember the speakers on these poles. They attached to your car window and enabled you to hear the movie. Today, you can hear the movie through your car radio.

Feeling hungry? If so, you’re in luck because King Drive-In has a concessions building that sells everything from nachos and popcorn, to hamburgers and hot dogs. There’s even a great selection of candy. Don’t forget to bring along your appetite.

The next time you’re looking for something fun to do during the weekend, consider a drive to Russellville to watch a movie at the town’s historic King Drive-In. This drive-in theater normally has double features every Friday and Saturday night. Sometimes triple features. It’s a definite must-visit for movie lovers of all ages and will certainly fill you with lots of nostalgia.
