Restaurants come and go all the time in Southern California. It seems like it’s almost every day that a new, trendy restaurant opens to the masses. However, there are some spots that have stuck around due to the fact that they continue to serve up mighty fine food, like a little place in Los Angeles called Tam O’Shanter. This Scottish steakhouse is one of the oldest in the city, first opening in 1922. (The oldest restaurant in California has been around since 1849) In addition to its rich history, this restaurant continues to serve hearty fare that always hits the spot! If you don’t have Tam O’Shanter on your dining bucket list already, you’ll want to be sure to add it.
Located in Atwater Village, The Tam O’Shanter is one of Los Angeles’ oldest restaurants. Boasting a history as rich as its food, it’s the type of restaurant you have to treat yourself to at least once.

Established in 1922, the longstanding steakhouse has been operated by the same family in the same location for a century. It was opened by Lawrence Frank and Walter Van de Kamp, who were founders of Van de Kamp’s Holland Dutch Bakeries and would go on to found Lawry’s restaurant chain and seasoning company.

Tom O’Shanter definitely has its atmosphere down! Inside, you’ll enjoy a cozy Scottish theme complete with medieval weapons, kilts, and tartans for various clans - if you’re Scottish, you may just spot your family’s tartan on the wall.

However, it’s the food that has made the Tam O’Shanter an L.A. icon. The menu consists of Scottish-inspired dishes like Toad in the Hole, a hearty dish consisting of diced filet of beef, carrots, onions, kale, Guinness gravy, and a side salad.

If you feel like a steak, though, you’ve come to the right place. Their world-famous prime rib is some of the best in the city and it comes in four different cuts: Tam O’Shanter Cut, English Cut, California Cut, and Prince Charlie Cut. All prime rib cuts include mashed potatoes, fresh horseradish, and creamed spinach or corn.

Looking for a unique brunch spot? The Tam O’Shanter does that, too! Brunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays only. Enjoy a selection of brunch options you won’t find anywhere else, like Yorkshire Eggs Benedict (shaved prime rib, horseradish hollandaise, poached eggs, and chives.)
