One Of The World S Largest Department Stores Is In New York City

Macy’s was founded in 1858 by Rowland Hussey Macy. Today, Macy’s has more than 500 stores. However, none is as big as the company’s flagship store in Manhattan. Not only is Macy’s Herald Square the largest department store in New York, but it’s one of the largest stores in the entire world. It takes up an entire city block, and people come from all over the world to visit it. Read on to learn more about this gigantic store.

Macy’s Herald Square is located at the intersection of 34th Street, Broadway, and Sixth Avenue. It opened in this location in 1902 and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and was made a National Historic Landmark in 1978.

It is quite gigantic. The building covers an entire New York City block. Inside, Macy’s takes up 2.5 million square feet; 1.25 million feet of that space is for retail space, and the rest is for offices. It’s the chain’s corporate headquarters in addition to being its largest store.
