Patrick Marsh is a place that was long home to Native Americans who hunted, trapped, and fished on the lake here. It was also an important stop for people who used foot trails that passed through here.

You can see Patrick Marsh from U.S. Highway 151, and the nature preserve has a connection to this multi-lane highway. In the 1980s, when the state expanded the highway, it purchased the land as a way to mitigate the wetlands lost during the highway expansion.
