If there is one hike you make in your lifetime, the Peak to Prosperity Passage in South Carolina should be THE hike. It’s one segment of the larger statewide network of former rail trails known as the Palmetto Trail, which now covers an impressive 350 miles of an intended 500.

The Peak to Prosperity Trail is a mere 10.8 miles of that larger hiking trail in South Carolina — and so far, we think it’s the most beautiful 11 miles you’ll ever see along the bigger trail.

It begins in Alston, where you’ll cross a 1,100-foot old railroad trestle over the picturesque Broad River.

In total, the Peak to Prosperity passage has 14 bridges over which to cross as you make your way to the other end of this section of the Palmetto Trail.

And, as the headline suggests, there are tunnels galore! You may be hard-pressed to keep track of the number of gorgeous tree tunnels found along this awesome trek.

But tree tunnels and bridges, as fantastic as they are, aren’t the only things to see and do on the Peak to Prosperity Passage.

Some of those bridges have amazing underbellies and the Palmetto Conservation Foundation (stewards of the trail) has seen to it that many are easily accessible.

During your 10.8-mile journey, you’ll also pass through the site of an ancient German settlement from the 1730s. And eventually, when you reach the Pomaria area, you can pop into a small store to refuel before you head to the end of the trail.

By far (at least so far) this short segment of the Palmetto Trail is our fave. Will this year be the year you hike it?

Or have you already conquered this passage of the statewide trail? We’d love to know!
