Since 1987, Rockford has hosted the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition where teams from around the state compete for a spot at the U.S. Nationals Snow Sculpting Competition. This winter, from January 20 to 23, 2021, families are invited to watch teams sculpt piles of snow into massive works of frozen art. This event will surely be a highlight.

The Rockford Park District is the host of the 35th Annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition which will be held at Sinnissippi Park. The event is free for those who want to spectate, but donations are certainly welcome!

There are two types of team levels at the event - the state teams that compete for a spot at the national competition and the high school division.

Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition/Facebook State eams cannot have more than three members while high school teams can have up to four members plus an adult to supervise.

Blocks of snow are assigned by lottery to teams and are six feet long by six feet wide and 10 feet in height.

Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition/Facebook Teams can only use snow, ice, and water. Dyes to color the snow and power tools are not allowed.

Finished sculptures cannot be larger than 12 feet in diameter but can be as tall as the sculptors desire.

Teams work on their snow sculptures from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. each day. The Friday of the competition, teams can work tirelessly through the night until 10 a.m. on Saturday when the judging will occur.

Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition/Facebook The public can cast votes for the People’s Choice category from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. Winners are announced at the awards ceremony scheduled at 1 a.m.

Spectators may walk or drive through the park to view the snow sculptures from sunrise until 10:30 p.m. each day of the event.
