U.S. Route 5 in Vermont is the ideal road to take if you’re heading south to north when you’re in the Green Mountain State. Although the road starts in Connecticut and continues up to Canada, the Vermont portion of this highway presents many opportunities to explore quaint New England towns and check out scenic views.

Since U.S. Route 5 loops around White River Junction, take a moment to soak in the views from Lyman Point Park. The Connecticut River Byway also swings by this part of Vermont.

At this point in your journey, you might be ready for a bite to eat. Since the infamous P&H Truck Stop is a quick detour off of U.S. Route 5 in Wells River, fuel up here before continuing on your adventure.

Upon reaching Northern Vermont, you’ll also come across the Passumpsic River. Since U.S. Route 5 runs along the river in this part of the state, you’ll be treated to water views starting just past the town of Barnet.

When you reach Derby Line, take time to check out the historic Haskell Free Library and Opera House. Then, feel free to continue on to Quebec. At this point, U.S. Route 5 will have changed over to Quebec Route 143.
