The Southern territory of Kettle Moraine State Forest is comprised of more than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, lakes, and woodlands. It’s a popular hiking area for its diverse landscape and recreation options.
The Southern area is close to Milwaukee and Chicago and offers a wide variety of camping options.

When you visit, take the Ice Age Trail to visit the Lapham Observation Tower. From this 45-foot structure, you can see the beautiful landscape from a new, higher, vantage point.

Many of the trails in the park are rated as easy. They may be long, but the terrain isn’t too rigorous and hikers of all skill levels can enjoy the walk. In the summer birding is popular and hikers can spot wildflowers along the paths. In the winter a beautiful, snowy solitude settles on the forest.

For a true trek experience, stay in one of the Adirondack-style shelters situated around the park. These shelters include a fire ring to keep you warm on frigid nights and enough of a structure to keep you sheltered from the elements.
