We sure do love to be scared, don’t we? It seems like every town in Nebraska has its own share of creepy, spooky, scary stories that both delight and terrify everyone who hears them. From all our haunted places to our urban legends in Nebraska, the Cornhusker State is full of the spooky and scary. According to the people in Geneva, Smitty’s Curve may just be the most haunted road in Nebraska, but you may have to hear the story for yourself to be the judge.

As always, if you see signs that indicate no trespassing or private property, please take caution and do not proceed.

The story goes that just outside of Geneva, in Fillmore County, there’s a curvy road with two bridges.

Hauntin.gs

One night many years ago, a young man known simply as “Smitty” drove his new car too fast down this road.

Hauntin.gs

Smitty was unfamiliar with the road and didn’t realize that there was a bridge coming up. He whipped his car around a curve and slammed into the bridge, sending him flying into the water below.

Hauntin.gs

Smitty managed to crawl out of the murky waters and make his way up a hill to a barn in search of help.

Hauntin.gs

Some say the night was cold and Smitty froze to death there in the barn. Others simply say Smitty’s injuries were too severe and he succumbed to them before he was found. However it went, Smitty never left that barn alive.

Hauntin.gs

Today, some drivers say that when the conditions are right, you can see Smitty pulling his mangled body up the hill toward help. You can hear his screams and groans drifting through the night air…and if you approach him to offer help, he vanishes.

Hauntin.gs

One variation of the story involves Smitty’s angry (or maybe mischievous) ghost. According to a couple of locals, if you park on the second bridge, honk your horn three times, flash your lights twice, then get out of your car and close the doors, Smitty will lock them. He’ll tamper with the engine if you turn the car off on the bridge.

Hauntin.gs

There’s yet another legend associated with this haunted road - one that has nothing to do with Smitty. Some locals believe that a young boy once hanged himself in a barn that used to stand along this road. And today, his uneasy spirit haunts the area.

Hauntin.gs

As with many hauntings, it’s difficult to tell if there’s any truth to these stories. The tale of Smitty’s demise is likely a cautionary tale meant to warn would-be speeders of the dangers of reckless driving.

Hauntin.gs

But regardless of whether these stories have any basis in reality, hauntings are always fun to share. Have you ever experienced anything spooky or paranormal on a winding road outside of Geneva? Tell us about it in the comments!
