Brent Moore - Flickr Closed officially in 1992, the Tennessee State Prison used to house the state electric chair and was filled to bursting with dangerous male criminals. The castle-like exterior has been used in “The Green Mile,” and the grounds for multiple music videos.
Located in West Nashville, the secluded atmosphere and brooding heat of the spot makes for an interesting visit. You won’t be able to drive up to it (there’s a posted guard), but you can see the gorgeous spot perfectly well from the road. You may not be able to see this site yourself we found a beautifully crafted cinematic short film depicting the property by the Tennessee Department of Correction:

Jason Barmer/Flickr Editor’s note: In 2019 this stadium was demolished. Herschel Greer Stadium was operational from 1978 to 2014, and used to be the home to the Nashville Sounds. It has since been left to the elements, hundreds of once-beloved seats cracking and fading in the sun. Even though this piece of history no longer stands we still have videos of what it looked like before it was destroyed. Thanks to Mitch Burns we get to enjoy something that is long gone but not forgotten.

Anthony Jones - Flickr There isn’t a lot of written history about the hulking meat packing plant on the edge of the river, but the packing company serves as a throwback to Nashville’s factory laden roots. You’d never know this crumbling bit of history is only six blocks from the capitol downtown, in Germantown.
We’ve always found this super interesting – exploring the unknown and forgotten. This road trip among Nashville’s most abandoned places is sure to be unforgettable.
