No matter who you are – a single person, a parent, a retired person – nothing feels better than knowing you live in one of the many safe places to live in Minnesota. There a nice feeling of peace that comes over you when you don’t have to worry about violent crime or property crime. Luckily for Minnesotans, our beautiful state is generally considered to be among the safest. But some communities stand out above the rest. Safewise tells us that there are ten safest cities in Minnesota that stand out above the rest. Read on below to learn more about the cities and what makes them safe.

The ten safest cities in Minnesota are Elko New Market (#1), Corcoran, Dayton, West Hennepin, La Crescent, Big Lake, Cold Spring/Richmond, Minnetrista, Belle Plaine, and Farmington (#10).

These cities were chosen based on FBI crime data and population data, looking at both violent crimes and property crimes, to determine the safest places in the state.

Overall, the number of violent crimes has slightly increased in the past year, echoing the slight increase in violent crimes nationwide. The crime rate in Minnesota in 2021 was 2.4 per 1,000 residents, well below the national average.

Each of Minnesota’s top 10 safest cities reported fewer than 25 violent crimes each in the past year. Corcoran — ranked #2 on the list — reported 0 violent crimes. Elko New Market (#1) and Dayton (#3) reported 1 violent crime each.

Property crime was also a factor in the rankings. Minnesota is right in line with the national average at 20.8 per 1,000 residents. About 14% of Minnesota property crimes are burglaries.

Package theft is also a concern in Minnesota. A Safewise survey found that 29% of respondents had a package stolen in the past year. This is higher than the national average of 20%.

Despite this, about 60% of Minnesota’s safest cities reported less than 100 total property crimes.

In addition to the Top 10 safest cities, Safewise also listed 10 other top safe towns in Minnesota. These included Orono (#11), Northfield, Jordan, Wyoming, Rosemount, Lino Lakes, New Ulm, Lakeville, Chaska, and Medina.
