Northern California is a waterfall enthusiasts’s paradise. There’s simply too many of them to count, and each one is unique and incredible in its own way. However, if you only have time to see one of them this summer, make it this one. The hike to this massive waterfall is challenging, but once you see it you’ll be totally blown away. Pictures simply don’t do this waterfall justice. This is a sight you need to see in-person to believe.
“Horsetail Falls” is a common name for waterfalls that cascade down a cliffside a certain way. The one we’re referencing in this article is located near South Lake Tahoe and can be accessed via the Horsetail Falls Trail; a moderate but extremely rewarding hike in the Desolation Wilderness.

The hike begins at the Twin Bridges Trailhead off of Highway 50. From the trailhead you’ll follow the signs that are labeled as the Pyramid Creek Trail (you will have to get a wilderness permit from the Ranger Station at this point).

The three-mile hike starts off pretty easy before gaining a bit of elevation. The trail isn’t very well-marked, so it’s recommended you bring a trail map with you. If you’re ever in doubt, just stay close to the water. That will be sure to lead you to the magnificent waterfall at the end.

The last half-mile or so of the hike is considered the most difficult. There will be some granite boulders that you have to scramble over in order to continue on the trail. However, you’re about to see that this semi-challenging hike was totally worth the effort.

You’ll hear Horsetail Falls before you see it. The sound of rushing water cascading down the rocks is actually quite loud. Once the falls finally come into view, you’ll be totally floored.

It can be hard to tell by pictures just how big the waterfall is. The picture below can give you a rough idea of how big the waterfall is in comparison to a person. Early summer is the best time to see this wonderful waterfall, since that is when flows are the heaviest.
