The Linda Vista Community Hospital had a relatively short life of operation, running from 1924 to 1991. Yet in that time, the activity that went on there was strange enough to warrant paranormal investigations that continue today. With its long empty corridors and broken window panes, the hospital has also been the site of horror films and other productions. Learn more about this haunted building and see if you dare to visit what some consider to be perhaps the most haunted abandoned place in Southern California.
Originally known as the Santa Fe Railroad Company, Linda Vista Community Hospital opened its doors in 1924.
Wikipedia It is located in the Boyle Heights neighborhood in Los Angeles, California.
It was built for railroad workers, who would be treated with great care.
Jess/flickr There were even cows and chickens on site so that the patients could enjoy fresh farm produce, including milk, eggs, and butter. The building was renovated along the way and by 1989 was renamed to its current title.
Around that time, patient care began to steadily decline. Many of the railroad workers began using medical insurance policies instead.
Paul Narvaez/flickr The surrounding neighborhoods which were once prosperous became increasingly poorer, and the hospital lost much of its funding.
As the neighborhoods became more dangerous, patients came in needing treatment for stabbings and gunshot wounds.
Jess/flickr/flickr This increased the mortality rate, and Linda Vista Community Hospital was blamed harshly. Many of its doctors transferred to different hospitals and by 1991, the operation had shut down.
What remains today is not only just an abandoned Southern California hospital, but one of the most haunted abandoned buildings in the entire state!
Jess/flickr Wandering down the long corridors and chilling rooms, it’s no wonder why so many movie production companies have selected Linda Vista as their ideal set.
A darker part of the hospital’s history implies that there may have been malpractice. The high death count might have been attributed to more than just gang violence in the nearby area.
Jess/flickr Some reports suggest that even the simplest of procedures and operations were done poorly. Paranormal investigators believe this to be a reason for trapped spirits to haunt the site.
Those who visit Linda Vista Community Hospital report intense claustrophobia. On several occasions, visitors also report a paralyzing fear after having seen an apparition right before their eyes!
Grendl/Flickr One of the most haunted rooms in the building is the 1st floor trauma room, where the ghost of a little girl is said to reside.
So, if you’re ever searching for “abandoned places near me,” this spooky spot is sure to appear near the top of the list!
