Even many locals don’t know about the North Truro Air Force Station: an abandoned neighborhood in Massachusetts. Built in 1951 at the start of the Cold War, the Truro Air Force Station was a 110-acre military training and living space.

Since the former station is now national parkland, you can actually visit and explore. Besides a bit of vandalism, many of the old buildings are just as they were.

The site is home to an abandoned bowling alley, a bar, and a neighborhood of family homes, along with military buildings like barracks and offices.

The base was decommissioned in 1985 and now belongs to the Cape Cod National Seashore. In fact, they run educational and arts programs in six of the original buildings.

However, many of the buildings, including the family homes, have been deemed too hazardous to repurpose or even to demolish due to asbestos and other scary chemicals.

If you want to check out this abandoned place, it’s open year-round. Bring your bike and cycle along the overgrown road that will take you right along some of the coolest abandoned buildings and within view of the sea.

The North Truro Airforce Station (now the Highlands Center) is located off of Route 6 at the Highland Light Exit in North Truro, Massachusetts. Turn right off of the exit onto Highland Road and continue on for about 0.6 miles before turning left onto Old Dewline Road. You’ll find the entrance at the end of the road.
