Maine is quirky. It’s unique and funny and weird. And it’s exactly how we like it! There are a lot of ways to experience the more unexpected side of the state, but this little place is one of the best. In existence for longer than we ever knew, this store has been delighting the locals and we think it’s time the rest of us paid a visit.

Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, since the time of publication, Big Al’s has since closed.

If you live in Maine and have a TV, there’s a good chance you already know about Big Al’s Super Values in Wiscassett. This 16,000-foot store can’t be missed.

Big Al’s Super Values / Google Big Al started his namesake business in the 80s, after moving from NYC.

He’d been involved in his family’s successful retail business there but was ready for a calmer life and Maine was the answer.

Big Al is a force. Wearing ruler suspenders and a gorilla t-shirt, he charmed his way into Mainers looking to save and never looked back.

And we haven’t looked back either. There’s no better place to go if you need, well, just about anything!

Yarn to finish that sweater before winter comes? It’s here!

They’ve got everything paper goods to cutlery to clothes to dolls. And the prices are worth browsing even if you don’t know what you want!

Most of the time you’ll walk out with a carload of things you didn’t know you needed, but can’t live without!
