Let’s be real here: the cat is out of the bag, and the bag is probably on fire – kind of like Indiana is (figuratively speaking, anyway). Turns out, Indiana is nothing near the “flyover state” it frequently gets pegged as; it’s outrageously beautiful, with an amazing array of landscapes, natural wonders, beautiful towns, and so much more to offer that it’s almost silly. For example, did you know that there are numerous waterfalls in Indiana (among plenty of other natural delights)? It’s true – let’s take a closer look at one of the lesser-appreciated, elusive falls: Rock Rest Falls.
Hidden away on the grounds of the breathtakingly gorgeous Calli Nature Preserve is a waterfall that is neither enormous nor significant, but its delicate splendor is still worthy of seeking out.
Jenna Peace/Google Local Its volume varies at any given time based on rainfall, snowmelt, and other factors; sometimes, it’s a mere trickle. Others, it’s a cascade. Timing is everything.
Calli Nature Preserve is no slouch itself; the entire grounds is amazing and worthy of exploration. The falls are the frosting on top.
KEN STALKUP/Google Local The preserve - and the falls - are outrageously photogenic, and it’s something to look forward to year-round (but most especially in the spring, during snowmelt and rainy times).
Rock Rest Falls is one of those places that look and feel like something out of a movie instead of the ol’ Midwestern United States.
Steven Claycam/Google Local We think it’s typically at its best when it’s surrounded by lush greenery, but honestly, no matter what’s going on - this little waterfall is a treat.
Even when the volume is meager, it’s a lovely reminder of the underappreciated beauty of the Hoosier State.
Gwendolyn Cutter/Google Local Locals who know about this little slice of paradise tend to visit on weekends, so if you’d like to try and get this little wonder to yourself, you might want to try hiking to it during the week (and early in the morning).
Of course, you’ll want to save time to explore the rest of the preserve, too. It’s all beautiful, even if you’re coming for the waterfall.
Lexi Jones/Google Local Here, you’ll find an array of native plant species, including some delightfully rare ones. Recently, the Preserve received an amazing gift: the gift of 10,000 new trees thanks to a couple of generous grants.
So, come for the waterfall, but stay for the wonder - it’s worth it.
