Small towns tend to be built with a close sense of community. Everyone knows your name and people are willing to lend a helping hand when needed. Spend enough time in any small town and it won’t take long for dark secrets to be revealed. The Hallowell Quarry in Maine may have been a popular swimming spot years ago, but the woods hid something more sinister than just trespassing teenagers.
The Hallowell Quarry has been a known spot for years as a swimming hole.
Lisa Strainer/ Alltrails It is actually illegal to go swimming in the water but the place was too alluring to many groups of rebellious teens. Kids would gather and sneak into the woods to get the thrill of jumping off the huge rocks into the water below.
You may not be able to explore the Quarry but the Hallowell Resivor right next to it is open with a couple of trails leading through the woods. The Quarry or the Resivor may seem like normal Maine woods but they hid and hosted local legends of dark origins.

It all started with typical reports of missing sheep and goats from local farmers.
David Ullman/ Alltrails It seemed strange but not an abnormal occurrence. Maybe a coyote got a hold of them and took them away from the farm. Either way, not much thought was put into the missing animals, that is until more information about their whereabouts began to emerge.
Soon stories about what was happening in the woods near the Quarry started spilling out of the forest and into the community. Mysterious figures were seen entering the woods late into the night, and weird noises were heard deep in the forest.

Soon people got curious and started to investigate.
Anna Bouchard/ Alltrails When they went into the forest they discovered large stones in a ritualist circle and odd cultic markings all over them. Then a large flat stone with grooves cut into it was found. Bones of the missing goats and sheep were collected at the base.
It became evident that a group had stolen the local barnyard animals and sacrificed them in some dark ritual hidden deep in the woods at night. More terrifying stories of strange people hanging around that section of the woods started coming out and gained it a local legend status.

Still to this day, the woods around the Hallowell Quarry in Maine are said to hold dark tales of the things that once happened in the forest. It certainly is unnerving that such horrible acts were committed, but it just makes you wonder what could be hiding at night deep in the woods.
