There are some great larger cities in Georgia. A visit to Atlanta, Savannah, or Macon will yield almost unlimited attractions. But if you really want to get in touch with the Peach State’s culture, there’s nothing like a getaway to one of our wonderful small towns. We have no shortage of amazing small towns in Georgia that are perfect for some relaxing time away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Madison (2021 population: 4,894)
Kat…/Flickr Madison is one of our favorite towns for a weekend getaway in Georgia. It’s full of historic buildings, and you’ll find lots of local restaurants and cafes to support. The downtown area is quite walkable and has plenty of green spaces to check out. According to local legend, the town was spared in Sherman’s March to the Sea because of its beauty. - Washington (2021 population: 3,704)
Downtown Washington Another town filled with history and architectural beauty is Washington. This is where the Confederacy voted to dissolve itself, so it’s where the Civil War officially ended. It’s one of the most historical towns in Georgia, with plenty of great landmarks to check out.
- Helen (2021 population: 545)

You’ll find murals on many buildings, tons of tasty German fare, and, of course, plenty of beer. It’s also surrounded by natural beauty, with state parks and waterfalls all within easy distance. - Darien (2021 population: 1,517)

- Jekyll Island (2020 population: 866)
Neal Wellons/Flickr Jekyll Island was once one of the most exclusive vacation destinations in the world, frequented by the Vanderbilts and other wealthy families. Only one-third of the island is allotted for commercial purposes, meaning that much of it is left to its incredible natural beauty. It’s one of the prettiest barrier islands in Georgia.
