The blue-green water is absolutely spectacular to look at. It looks like something straight out of a tropical paradise. The unusual color is due to natural elements and compounds within the earth.

You might be tempted to jump right in this gorgeous water, but that’s an impulse you will want to avoid. What was once the Elizabeth Copper Mine was (up until recently) a Superfund site.

Superfund sites are places throughout the country that have been exposed to extreme pollution. These sites require long-term action to clean up contamination and hazardous materials that are harmful to both the environment and human health.

It’s so visually stunning, even if there is toxic waste in the land here. This is one place that’s definitely better to be observing via photos than with in-person exploration.
