This Beautiful Church In Georgia Is A Work Of Art

There’s no shortage of beautiful churches in Georgia. We’ve got plenty of historical ones in small towns that show off amazing architectural brilliance, and it doesn’t get much more beautiful than the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Savannah. One under-appreciated church that we think doesn’t gets enough love is the stunning Christ Church Episcopal on St. Simon’s Island. Even if you aren’t particularly religious, there’s something incredible about this building that gives visitors a sense of peace and tranquility when on the premises.

St. Simons Island is among the most beautiful of the barrier islands in Georgia. It’s home to many attractions, and one of the loveliest is Christ Church.

Christ Church Frederica - St. Simons Island/Facebook The church is right beside the Fort Frederica National Monument park, a stunning and historic attraction in its own right.

The mission was founded in 1736 and its first building was constructed in 1820. St. Simons Island was evacuated during the Civil War and Union troops occupied the island. Sadly, the original church was destroyed in 1862.

The current building was constructed in 1884 on the same site where the previous church stood.

The wood here is all heart pine and it’s never been painted or stained. It’s absolutely magnificent.

The church still hosts weekly services as well as funerals and weddings.
