New Jersey’s forests are hiding all sorts of secrets. Lots of us know about the abandoned villages of the Pine Barrens, including Batsto and Estelle Manor, but did you know that North Jersey has its own share of abandoned spots? Feltville is a deserted and eerie village that you can hike right through, up in the highlands of New Jersey near I-78. This is one of the most haunted hikes in New Jersey, and it’s one you won’t soon forget. The next time you’re looking up “abandoned hiking trails near me,” we hope this mysterious hiking trail in New Jersey comes to mind.
The Watchung Reservation is tucked away in Union County, New Jersey. It’s home to miles of trails, wildlife, and an abandoned, deserted village.

As you wander through Feltville, you’ll encounter eight houses, a church, a general store, and even an old carriage house. This village was originally a mill town, but it turned into a small farm town, and eventually drew in summertime visitors to its mountain location.

Despite being called the “Deserted Village” on official Watchung maps, there are three families that still live here. Their homes are private property, but the rest of the village is open to visitors who want to hike through.

The forest itself is beautiful, and you can see how the landscape was used for milling and farming. There are remnants of the past scattered about.

There are plenty of urban legends of Feltville ghosts. Whether the village itself is haunted or not… you’ll have to decide for yourself.

There’s even a cemetery here, which helps fuel rumors of ghosts and spirits still hanging around their old mills and summer homes.

You can learn more about the history of the old mill and village, which dates back to the 1700s, on the Union County Parks website.

Haunted Hikes NJ April 07, 2022 Tori Jane What are some great hikes in Union County, NJ? First and foremost, Watchung Reservation, as you read above, is definitely one of the best hiking destinations in New Jersey with more than 13 miles of excellent trails, but what about some others? Despite the overall small stature of our little state, there are all kinds of wonderful hiking trails in New Jersey. Some of our favorite trails are located in Union County, NJ, a beautiful little slice of heaven perfect for the outdoors enthusiast to enjoy. Among the best hikes in Union County, New Jersey, are gems like trails within Washington Rock State Park, and the South Mountain Reservation and its trails are pretty awe-inspiring as well. We also love the hikes at the Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area, Eagle Rock Reservation, and more. Union County, NJ is perfect for hikers of every skill level. Where are some of the creepiest haunted places in New Jersey? Did you know that there seems to be a strangely high number of haunted places in New Jersey? We’re not entirely certain why, though our first guess is that because New Jersey is an older territory, it’s got a lot more history going for it, resulting in plenty of creepy haunted places all over the state you’ve got to visit to believe. For example, in Port Monmouth, there’s a little place known as The Spy House. The Spy House in New Jersey is a cute little white, wooden building hanging out on Sandy Hook Bay that was built at some point in the 1600s. It’s allegedly haunted by at least a few wayward souls, making it one of the creepiest places in New Jersey. Other great haunted places in our little state include the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City and the infamous Ringwood Manor in Ringwood, New Jersey.
