When it comes to landmarks, Idaho is best known for its natural features: plunging canyons, magnificent lakes, soaring mountain peaks, and other stunning locations. However, our state is also home to quite a few historic buildings that stand out. But for the romantic at heart, or the tragically-inclined, few places bring out our inner nobility quite like fairy tales, secret castles, and knightly quests.

Fortunately, Idaho is home to a number of secret, imagination-stirring castles that can be ogled from a distance on long road trips. Even more fortunately, not all of these castles take extended drives or GPS-hunting to find; in fact, one of them reigns supreme right near downtown Boise.

Editor’s Note: The Boise Castle on Warm Springs is no longer up for sale. But never fear! Idaho has a few other castles to pique your royal curiosity, some of which are even listed as vacation rentals.

For many, Warm Springs Avenue in Boise is the capital’s most charming historic district.

But few of these magnificent homes are as whimsical and attention-grabbing as the famous “Warm Springs Castle.”

Sotheby’s International Realty This petite medieval-inspired residential home is a relatively new addition to the downtown Boise area, only dating back to 2011. Uniquely crafted from local sandstone and heated geothermally, this quaint castle is not only distinct from its neighbors, but eco-friendly as well.

But don’t be fooled - this life-sized fairy tale isn’t as petite as it looks from the street.

Four stories, multiple walkways, and a meandering network of chambers actually stretch back far beyond the front facade.

In addition to the nearly 6,000 square feet of sumptuous living space, elegant wrought iron details, buttress motifs, and authentic medieval touches make this castle truly a luxurious haven.

The two towers are styled after the Magdala Tower in France and the Tower of London, while the interior plays host to a number of incredible period-pieces, including a full suit of armor, a dragon sculpture, and a gargoyle. Yes, there are even a few secret passageways tucked away inside, for any fellow Radcliffe fans!

But as with any phenomenal landmark, it’s all about the details. That’s why a handcrafted portcullis…

While certain luxuries may stray from the home’s medieval roots….the rooftop jacuzzi will make you forget such primitive ways.

In addition to the hot tub (complete with a stunning view), period torchlights, a firepit, kitchen, bar area, and green house also complete the setup.
