No matter the season, here in Kansas, we always have plenty on our bucket lists and can often have a hard time choosing what to visit first. But we’ve got you covered! The only thing better than hearing about an amazing attraction in your state is hearing that it’s also free to visit. One of Kansas’ most spectacular natural wonders is also relatively overlooked, but this incredible rock formation will blow your mind with its size and sheer beauty. Without further ado, let’s check out what’s been hiding out in rural Kansas!

Do you recognize this rock formation from above? It’s one of our favorite places to visit, but it looks much more impressive from the ground.

Of course, that formation is Monument Rocks, a stunning area of tall rock face made of Niobrara Chalk.

Way back, during the Cretaceous period, there was a huge area of sea cutting through the middle of what is now the United States. Deposits left at the bottom of that sea are what you see here, stacked into layers making up this huge formation.

Today, the formation is towering at 70 feet tall in some places, completely surrounded by flat ground on all sides.

It’s been named one of the “Eight Wonders of Kansas,” and no wonder, with how unique and beautiful it is.

After 80 million years, this is what’s currently left behind for us to enjoy. As long as the roads aren’t too wet, you’ll have no issue getting over here to enjoy this piece of Earth’s art.

You can visit anytime during regular daylight hours, and you’re asked to keep off of the formations, as pieces have been broken in the past and they can never be repaired. The minerals here are incredibly delicate, despite how sturdy they may look.

Other than keeping off of the structures, feel free to take as many photos as you like, and enjoy every second looking over the formation and finding tiny fossils, bird nests, and more.
